Operational performance monitoring

Turbines commonly under-perform, through incorrect configuration, non-optimal adjustment for site conditions, blade pitch angle faults, yaw misalignment and incorrectly applied constraint.

The evaluation of wind farm performance compared to budget is often left for years after construction.  In part this is because fault identification is seen as a costly and uncertain process.

The Prevailing Performance Monitor is a lightweight, low cost solution to identify problem assets across a portfolio.  Once identified, these projects can be targeted for detailed analysis, fault identification and yield improvement.

Prevailing Performance Monitor

Comparisons between actual and budget yield are often vague due to the variation of wind conditions each month, taking years to provide firm evidence of problems.

Prevailing has developed a unique performance tracking service that supplies retrospective monthly budget data sensitive to each month’s wind resource.  Expected wind farm yield is computed using a simulation of the project, even where complex constraint schemes are in force.  Comparison of actual performance to this monthly budget allows rapid identification of performance changes and problems.

The service is completely independent of the wind farm SCADA system.  Correlation quality with actual production is typically well in excess of 0.95, allowing early identification of problem projects.

It is a light-weight, low cost service, allowing implementation portfolio-wide.  The supplied data acts as an early warning system, directing wind farm operators to under-performing assets.

Yield improvement

Prevailing applies industry best practice SCADA analysis techniques, both for the reforecast of long-term yield, and identification of faults.

A full yield improvement service is available, including:

  • SCADA analysis for identification of fault causes;
  • Ground-based and nacelle-mounted LiDAR deployment to quantify turbine power curves, under-performance due to on-site conditions, and nacelle alignment.
  • Liaison with manufacturers to support configuration improvements, nacelle alignment and curtailment refinement.
  • Side-by-side testing to track and quantify yield improvement.
